Hello. This is Frank Kang who is introduced by Mr. Greg Moon, the president of Softbank Ventures Korea
Frank's Story 2010/01/27 11:27Dear Ms. Joyce Kim
(With my deep consideration for being polite, I am writing in my poor English to send this e-mail before my visit. Please read this in consideration. ^^)
Hello. I am Frank Kang who will visit Silicon Valley in February by the introduction of Mr. Greg Moon, the president of Softbank Ventures Korea.
At first, I was afraid that my visit would interfere with your busy schedule; however, it was a great pleasure to hear from president Moon that you would be available for a little while during my visit. And, I would like to personally thank you for making time in your busy schedule for my visit.
Please let me begin with my introduction.
I am currently an enrolled student in Chemical and Biological Engineering as well as Business Administration at Seoul National University, who runs a small venture business with the support of President Moon. As a 26-year-old healthy Korean man, I've just discharged from the military service under obligation to protect the country.
The personal connection with president Moon was begun 3 years ago through a business item, 'People2', invested by him. This business item has been an issue with Korean SNS (Social Networking Service),the first networking system which established to connect and exchange the value of people at that time.
A mini-homepage of Cyworld is all the rage in Korea nowadays. I don't know if you have it, but it is obvious that this mini-homepage of Cyworld is an extraordinary sensation based on the fact that over 30 million people among the entire Korean population of 50 million have this mini-homepage even though excluding senior citizens and children.
The successful case of Cyworld was introduced as a representative case of SNS. in 'Information Systems Today: Managing in the Digital World, 3rd edition' published by Prentice Hall, an American textbook publisher, and already evaluated as the most innovative business model in the Wharton School and Frost&Sullivan. In my opinion, Cyworld is the result especially made by personal desire both to express themselves and to connect with each other among various factors of its success.
For that reason, the method I created was a KEYWORD after all my worries to change people's desire of expression into more practical ways on the guess that everyone has a small but precious value of their own. People2 service came out of my worries to form a network both by asking for such a value in person and, by extension, exchanging their own value through searching or browsing based on the assumption that it is possible to show their trivial value by a KEYWORD. At that time, this service should have been expected to be 'Post-Cyworld.'
It seems that my strong will and passion between a cofounder and me was highly evaluated by president Moon. At that time, I served in ROTC(Reserve Officers' Traning Corps) Unit in University , but my challenge made me give up my commission and pour all my scholarship of the mean time for this project (for this reason, I consequently became to serve the military as a soldier). The reason why I was able to get a great opportunity in spite of my shortage was because president Moon is the person who emphasizes a spirit of challenge and invests in 'SUCH A PERSON'.
I actually apologize for extensive introduction. ^^;;
The visit of Silicon Valley was my long-cherished desire. I was dreaming for this for a long time, and it would be a precious experience achieved narrowly at this point of my completion in the military. Although I am a new entrepreneur with lack of ability, your challenge and dream heard from president Moon encouraged me a lot and made me realize that I would be able to learn more lessons for the rest of my life through this opportunity.
The environment for Korean ventures is said to be poor. I would not want to blame the environment, but I am willing to feel and see both the hidden potentials and developed system of Silicon Valley that achieved numerous mythologies as a mecca of venture business. If possible, I would like to discuss about the environment of Silicon Valley in comparison with Korean environment.
I was full of admiration by hearing a lot about 'Soompi.com', reading so many articles in blog, and using it personally. In my opinion, it is not polite to mention about your project on my first e-mail, but, if I may, I would like to share my idea as well as to discuss with you in person as a citizen with many interests in globalization of Korean culture. Especially, it would be great to hear the story of Silicon Valley. Needless to say, you are already so famous with great reputation in Korea. ^^*
“I just love to achieve together with people. Even though there are entirely 2 people only, I believe that I will enjoy a sense of accomplishment at the end of this challenge if Scoompi grows up properly. I don't want to do boring, dull, and repeating work.” - Joyce Kim
It is my desire to visit successful companies by myself, such as 'Mahalo.com'. In addition, I would like to visit other organizations with great reputation even without an appointment or a plan if it's possible.
During my stay in San Francisco from February 7th to 13th, I would run to San Jose to see you. Because of my desire to deeply feel for Silicone Valley as much as possible, my schedule is flexible enough.
I would not ask you for a broad range of your valuable time, yet please provide me a short amount of your schedule to discuss the regarding subject. Therefore, I am so happy that my dream to just meet you in person would come true since I first met you through president Moon's blog.
I would look forward to hear from you.
Wish you have a great night, ma'am.
Sincerely yours,
Frank Kang
