풍요에 이르는 길은 '많이 생산하거나' 아니면 '적게 원하는 것'의 두가지 방법이 있다. 현대 자본주의는 인간의 무한한 욕망을 충족시켜 주기 위해 더 많이 생산한다. 욕망은 끝이 없기에아무리 많이 생산해도 부족하다. 욕망은 결핍과 같은 말이다. 부족하지 않다고 느낄 때 욕망은 발생하지 않는다. 또 하나 풍요의 길은 적게 원하는 것 이다.

 적게 원하였던 석기시대 사람들은 하루에 3∼4시간을 일하고도 풍요로운 삶을 살았다. 그것은 적게 원하는 선(禪)의 길을 걸었기 때문이다. 현대인은 21세기 디지털 혁명에서 컴퓨터덕분에 하루에 3∼4시간만 일하고 나머지는 놀이시간에 보낼 것을 꿈꾼다. 혹시나 우리는 석기시대 사람이 누렸던 풍요를 다시 얻기 위해 열심히 일해 오지는 않았는가. 그렇다고 풍요로운 핑크 빛의 미래가 다가오는 것은 아니다. 새로운 욕망코드가 계속 출현하면서우리는 그것을 만족시키기 위해 더 많은 일을 할 수밖에 없다.

 석기시대는 살린즈의 표현대로 시원(始原)의 풍요로운 사회였다. 우리가 찾고자 했던 세계는 이미 존재했었다. 잠깐 잊어버렸을 뿐이다. 1만년전 식량이 부족했던 석기시대에 소식할 수밖에 없었던 원시인의 유전자 정보는 아직 도 우리 몸에 축적되어 있다. 그래서 현대인의 육체는 과식에 적절히대응하지 못한다고 한다. 아직도 우리 몸은 과식의 자본주의를 거부하고 있다. 자본주의 사회가 권하는 허상의 욕망을벗겨 내면, 우리를 언제든지 순연(純然)의 공동체 사회로 초대하는 유전자의 욕구정보가 있을 것이다.

 자본주의 사회에서 생산의 목적은 이윤획득에 있다. 원시 공동체는 나눠주고 파괴하기 위해 생산한다. 대인(빅맨)은 힘들여 거둔 것을 부족민들에게 나눠주고 귀중한 기름을 태워 없애는 포트래치의 축제를 벌인다. 대인은 자신 의 생산물을 없애는 대신에 명예(honour)를 얻는다. 자신이 획득한 사냥감을 몰래 감춰 놓는 일은 죄악이다. 공동 체 사회는 나누지 않고 혼자 쌓아 두는 일을 금기하였다. 원시사회에서 +물질을 움직이는 것은 공동체의 가치와규범이었다. 왜, 원시인들이라고 혼자서 배불리 먹고 싶은 이기심이없었겠는가? 단지 공동체 사회가 이를 타부시하여 용납하지 않았기 때문이다.

 20세기를 '잠을 도둑맞은 시대'라고 부르는 사람도 있고, '24시간 사회'라고 부르는 사람도 있다. 그러나 살린스의 분석으로 보면 채집민들의 수면량은 어떤 문명시대보다도 긴 거의 12시간이었다. 노동 시간은 하루 4, 5시간에 지나지 않았으며 그러고서도 남자 한 명이 4~5명을 부양할 수 있었다는 것이다. 인구의 5분의 1 이상이 나머지 사람들이 식량을 대기위해 농업에 종사해야만 했던 제 2차 세계대전 때의 프랑스인들 보다도 훨씬 더 효율적이었다.

 무기 중노동의 형을 복역하고 있는 것은 야만스러운 구석기시대의 채집민들이 아니라 바로 생산과 소비의 무한경쟁 속에서 살아가고 있는 우리 자신이 아닐까?

An American businessman took a vacation to a small coastal Mexican village on doctor’s orders. Unable to sleep after an urgent phone call from the office the first morning, he walked out to the pier to clear his head. A small boat with just one fisherman had docked, and inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.

“How long did it take you to catch them?” the American asked.

“Only a little while,” the Mexican replied in surprisingly good English.

“Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” the American then asked.

“I have enough to support my family and give a few to friends,” the Mexican said as he unloaded them into a basket.

“But… What do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican looked up and smiled. “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”

The American consultant scoffed, “I am business consultant and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and, with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution.

“You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will this all take?”

To which the American consultant replied, “15-20 years.”

“But what then, senor?” asked the fisherman.

The consultant laughed, and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public. You’ll become very rich, you would make millions!”

“Millions, senor?” replied the Mexican. “Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”
